Re-branding of Form Six education system

Damn…Actually I had typed this blog yesterday. All of a sudden, streamyx line no connection. Called streamyx service centre to know what had happen…they replied, they didn’t know and the no connection will be dragged for two more days. That really piss me off. You pay for a line where there is no connection. That’s why I always complain…and COMPLAIN.

I read with interest about a news of the re-branding of Form Six education system. Here is the news at Utusan Malaysia.

I guess, now only the Education Director realise about the weakness in the previous From 6 system in Malaysia. It must be a relief to those that soon to take up Form 6 in the coming year, as Form 6 will be taught according to pre-university system. This supposed to be done a long time ago. Since the places at the local universities will be open up for STAM, STPM, Matriculation, and Diplomas; the Education force should have known that the current Form 6 education system would not be fair compare to the rest. Those from Matriculation and Form 6 still among the largest numbers of students that secure themselves a place at local higher institution, yet Matriculation and Form 6 has a different system of education. Those who are at Matriculation enjoy the test system as per semester, but those from Form 6 needed to gone through a test which compile syllabus from Lower Six to Upper Six. Moreover, Form 6 students still being taught like a secondary school students. As the matter of facts, if Form 6 is considered as either Pre-U programme or A-level, should they taught Form 6 students professionally and not to treat them as a Form 3 school students!

My experiences at Form 6 from year 2001-year 2002 S**Ks. That’s not because Form 6 syllabus aren’t interesting, it was because we needed to revise all the chapters of 4 main subjects PA-Pengajian Am, Maths, Biology, and Chemistry caused us to had our brain jammed. OK…I am not sure for those who score amazingly in Form 6…I didn’t know how they study or they are too smart…But all I can say is that, Form 6 eliminate my interest to continue my study. We need to have our English test as well, separately. It’s called MUET-Malaysia University Entrance Test. They are making it as a compulsory subject to be taken before you can enter to the local higher institution. Sh*t. They talk bulls*t. Who da hell that said needed to score at least Band 3 to ensure you qualified as a candidate for Uni entrance? It’s actually written black and white in the UPU form that we need to have at least Band 3. Crap. All I can tell is that all these minimun requirement for MUET doesn’t apply to ‘certain’ citizen in Malaysia. I had been posted to study at Terengganu. And so what? I learn a lot about the truth later, when I started to ask them their MUET qualification. Hell ya…all; mostly all of ‘them’ didn’t even get Band 3 in MUET and still entering University in proud. Poor those who score lovingly, but didn’t even being spare for a place in the University’s second intake.

I am not accusing blindly, these are the truth based from my discoveries during my study at East Coast. The programme that I had enrolled in needed us to take in compulsory subjects given by the University. There you go, my first semester at first year taking 18 credits. One of the subjects which draw my attention when the lecturer mentioned the ‘Survival of the fittest’ phrase by Darwin in natural selection. We heard it at Form 6 before…during our Biology classes, but neither one of them from Matriculation heard it. When I asked them, they said, the chapter being lifted up by the time they are in matriculation, to save the learning period. Maybe this only happened for that particular year…but could this incident happened at the first place? I am wondering how good it is…the quality between a matriculation student and a STPM student. Most of the time, we heard that those who are taking Matriculation are bumiputras. The G made matriculation available for non-bumiputra on year 2002. Those who are born at year 1985 are eligible to take up matriculation application, if they don’t want STPM. From that time onwards, more and more students opt for matriculation, because matriculation served as a ‘one way ticket’ to the local Universities. Percentage of matriculation students beig turned down a place in universities is low, but the percentage of STPM students being turned down is superb high. That’s why STPM is not preferred by most bumiputras… and dominated by mostly Non-bumiputras.

Even though the Education Ministry approved STPM, Matriculation, STAM, and Diplomas as the requirement for applying a place in local universities, but the teaching systems are totally different. Lets leave STAM out, because it’s religion school…and I don’t want to start the sensitive issue over here. So, left only Diploms, Matriculation and STPM. Diplomas and matriculation students are being taught as university education system. They are given per semester, accumulative credits and examination per semester. STPM system doesn’t apply any university system, instead they are still being taught as the secondary school system. Test will be given after the two years syllabus finished taught by the school teacher and no accumulative credits, as the tests are not given out per semester. This shown how unfair it is the education system towards the Form Six students.

Well, at least there is some one realising it. Hopefully the G will look seriously into re-branding the system for Form six. Not just ‘omong-omong kosong’.

Eh so you do support lowering the standard of Form 6 syllabi? Just my 0.02 worth, I think G should abolish matriculation system. It doesn’t serve any function at all except to benefit ‘those’ people. Undeserving people who find Form 6 difficult are better left alone to hunt for job, not blindly grabbing places in local university, and thus sparing nothing for the deserving people. That’s what I call survival of the fittest.

  2. Actually I do support if Matriculation being abolish, if POSSIBLE. But since, this is never happening thing, then we gotta blend ourselves into it as well. Since they are making things hard for form six, trying to eliminate them, i don’t think they will make matriculation syllabus harder. What to do, just to agree to lowering and ease the syllabus for Form six.

  3. becos the G doesnt understand or refuses to understand, and prevented the people to understand “the survival of the fittest”… darwin’s theory never exist in our country …

we hav too many uni grads, and many not up to par… becos the G make it so easy for so many ppl into uni… lowering the std of form6 will just make the situation worse.. what we need is an education system than harness the inherent quality of each individual, not everyone can be doctor or accountant or lawyer… some are better off trained as hairdresser, or other more skill-based jobs.. but we don’t have a proper system to encourage ppl to explore their capabilities and interests.. just tell them blindly that u be filthy rich if u study medicine, law, science etc.. while skill-based job workers dont earn any respect at all… then we end up with sub-par doctors lawyers accountants that nobody wanna hire, and importing foreign labours for all the dirty jobs..

    sorry.. a bit long-winded

  4. Nah…U ain’t long winded at all. It’s true. You got your point as well :p
I do think that to encourage ppl to take up study based on their skill and interest is great as well. But, can Malaysia become like this…since it is so examination based?
    Sigh…
